Since arriving in Canada I have become highly aware of my vocabulary. I didn't realise it but I say so much slang that my house mates have said that they only understand about 80% of what I say.
1. Arvo
Afternoon.
2. Old mate
A term of endearment to describe anyone: a stranger you just me; a legit, old friend; some politician on TV; an ex; or, your best friend's crush.
3. Singlet
A tank top.
4. Bathroom
Washroom.
5. Brekkie
Breakfast.
6. Tomahto
You say tomato.
7. Bloke
Man.
8. Bushwalk
Hike.
9. Autumn
Fall.
10. Bevvies
Beverages. Probably alcoholic. Usually beers.
11. Howyougoin?
Said in one breath - the equivalent of How are you doing?
12. Chook
Chicken.
13. Chockas
Full/Busy. "The bin is chockas" or "The club was chockas".
14. Eski
Chiller or cooler.
15. Tradie
Tradesperson like a carpenter, electrician or labourer.
16. Brissy
Brisbane.
17. How'd you pull up?
A question asked of a friend to see how they are after a night of heavy drinking.
18. Suss
Two meanings: the noun means suspicious while the verb means to investigate.
"That looks a bit suss".
"I'll have a suss around".
19. Footy
Football.
20. Sunnies
Shades.
